Lessons from the Pandemic - Lesson #5 How Well-being has Suffered

The Covid-19 pandemic has created apprehension beyond just the virus itself. This is true for employees on the front lines and those working from home. In fact, over half of all employees are worried about their well-being, and that is stalling productivity.

What is behind the loss of well-being? Employees want to feel safe, not just physically safe but safe financially and security for their families. They need a sense of security from their employers as they encounter the added burdens of the pandemics. Workers are stressed by heavier workloads (kids at home, care for elderly family members), plus uneasy political times and a barrage of negativity across all media. Lack of social interactions contribute as does the unease of the economy and individual financial situations. Depression and burnout are climbing, well-being is on the decline.

Well-being and resilience

What exactly is well-being? It’s a combination of mental, social, physical and financial health. They overlap and can occur simultaneously.

Not everyone is suffering. Nearly half of the workforce prefers their current working situation, the challenge for employers is to find a balance. There are ways to help build coping skills and grit, reduce stress, and increase hopefulness and resilience. Over 80 percent of employees welcome employer support in providing the resources to do this. Why invest in building soft skills such as resilience?

According to a recent survey by MetLife – the most resilient employees are 96% more productive! They are 91% more engaged and 19% less stressed.

Are your employees struggling?
